Ooops

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of stenographers.

NEW YORK McClatchy reported today that total revenue declined 1.1% to $211 million and advertising revenue slipped 0.3% to $179 million in August compared to the same period last year.
::
Including print and online, retail advertising revenue was up 1.7% to $74 million. National advertising dropped 7.5% to $16 million. Classified revenue decreased 2% to $74 million on declines in automotive (down 8%) and help-wanted (down 6%). Real estate was up 9.8%.
::
Circulation revenue fell 5.5% to $26 million.
::
By market, advertising revenue grew in California, up 1.8% to $32 million; Florida, up 1.2% to $24 million; the Northwest, up 6.6% to $18 million, and Texas, up 4.2% to $15 million. The Carolinas declined 0.8% to $31 million and the Midwest region dropped 7% to $42 million.

Gee. I wonder why they're having so much trouble. The Carolinas are, by any other measure, a booming economy. Must be time to cut some headcount and consolidate that cracker-jack reporting staff.

I'ze a leuking at yore werd "gimmick' wen yew wuz talkin bout that ther feller aname Kissell. Cordin mah old dikshenairy
it sayze gimmick means a device employed to cheat, deceive, or trick.

and with that, I'll lay off the bubba talk.

It seems to me a "reporter" would think to apply the word "gimmick" to Mr. Hayes use of a promise to vote against CAFTA to gain re-election...and then voting for CAFTA... an obvious device employed to cheat, deceive and trick the voters. I believe he has publicly been described as spineless....and a judas...and his district has lost more textile jobs than any other district in the nation. Of course you wouldn't think to print anything like that, would you?

You'll have to pardon me...but I just don't get it. You folks in the media are supposedly serving an invaluable service to our nation by printing factual information about what is going on in the world...keeping us informed...and making us aware when we're being deceived or used by government. Instead of rolling over like a puppy when some political hack preens for you, you're supposed to be smart enough and objective enough to ask intelligemnt questions...not print their self-serving drivel. You're actually part of the problem...and no one trusts you guys anymore.

Just an opinion....but the real gimmick is that ya'll call yourself a newspaper. Pshaw!

Double ooops

Plus no new digs for the Old Unreliable.

The company wanted to begin building on the site of its existing headquarters at 215 S. McDowell St. next year. But because of the "uncertain advertising revenue climate," the project won't start until at least 2008, publisher Orage Quarles III wrote in e-mail to employees Tuesday.

"This is disappointing news for us all -- we had hoped to see advertising rally and grow, and all of us have been excited about a new building for our evolving company," he wrote.

At least 2008? Hmmmmm. That sounds a lot like 'never' where I come from. Especially if Mr. Quarles is waiting for advertising to rally and grow.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

That just sucks for them...

I'm having trouble with the sympathy thing tonight for some reason.

I'm going to make an exception: the McClatchy team in Iraq (formerly Knight Ridder) led by Tom Lasseter has done superb reporting for the past three years. Their other foreign bureaux chiefs are also top-class. The local hacks? Not so much.

Thank you for that clarification

I absolutely was referring only to local employees. (I have a hard time calling them reporters or journalists.)

Good point, pseudo.

I am painting with an overly wide brush to make a small point about political reporting. But now that McNews has swallowed Knight Ridder (an organization I've mostly admired) I'm sure they will downsize the international news staff into oblivion.
