The N&O on education for illegal immigrants

The N&O doesn't often take unambiguous stands on its editorial page, but today is a welcome exception. Steve Ford and company deserve a pat on the back for this excellent commentary on the politics of education:

It should be clear that allowing motivated, capable young people to continue their education benefits both them and the public at large. Those young people already are entitled, reasonably, to attend public elementary and secondary schools. What's the point of denying them a chance to continue along the academic path? After all, most of them are here in the first place because they were brought by parents. Punishing them for a situation not of their making seems both unfair and counterproductive to society.

Roy Cooper blew this, as Graig quickly observed in his post earlier this week. Easley has stepped in, to his credit, to make it clear that he stands for opportunity and fairness. Perdue now has the chance to clarify her own position, to show she's both more enlightened and more pragmatic than Pat McCrory.

You're a fool.

California is in a budget crisis because they allow all kinds of stupid voter referendums that, if passed, they have to follow. It has tied the hands of the legislature and government.

"Illegal Alien Lovers."

Doesn't it remind you of the expression "nigger lovers?" Isn't that what people like Zeezil called those who advocated for civil rights for African Americans?

Mr. Alipac is getting move obvious w/ each post.

17 different languages

There are 17 different languages spoken in the homes of the kids who attend my daughters school. The diversity at her school is wonderful and we pat ourselves on the back everytime we visit and see her learning about people and cultures that are different than our middle class surburban one.

The student/parent talent show was last week and what a treat. Some of the performances were not that good but that didn't matter, it was fun and interesting.

My daughter is not only getting a great "book" education she is getting a great education on the real world, where not everyone looks like you, talks like you or acts like you.

My wife is first generation but she looks like us and so does her mother, so look out you right wing morons, they are everywhere, muhahahaha

RE: 17 different languages

And this is a good thing???

A major cost factor in the conduct of school operations relates to the vast number of children of illegal immigrants in our classroom and the special-training dictates for many of those students being taught in their native language — some 82 languages in San Diego County, 112 languages in Los Angeles County. – North County Times, March 2008.

In New York City alone, more than 200 languages are spoken in the public schools.

RE: California is a cautionary tale

Social services cost LA County over $36 million.

New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $36 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in January 2008, announced Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits are going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $19 million in welfare assistance for January 2008 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations, for a projected annual cost of $420 million.

“Illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact Los Angeles County taxpayers,” said Antonovich. “With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $420 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year – not including the millions of dollars for education.”

CA Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Irvine said the cost of illegal immigration to California has been estimated at $10.5 billion a year. “And if you look at the expansion of government and the estimates of the number of people who are here illegally, these costs are probably easily in excess of $11 billion a year,” he said.

The children you speak of are, most of them, American Citizens.

Why on earth would you deny services to American citizens - especially American citizens who are children? Seriously - no matter who their parents are, why deny them service? Children? Really?

Children. Little seven and eight year old kids. You'd let them suffer. Because of something their parents did. Kids. Really.

RE; the children you speak of...

They are not American citizens. They are illegal aliens.

CITIZEN:
1. a native or naturalized member of a state or nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection (distinguished from alien).
2. A person owing loyalty to and entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of a state or nation.
3. a native or naturalized individual who owes allegiance to a government (as of a state or nation) and is entitled to the enjoyment of governmental protection and to the exercise of civil rights.

ILLEGAL:
1. Unlawful; illegitimate; illicit; unlicensed.
2. Illegal, unlawful, illegitimate, illicit, criminal can all describe actions not in accord with law.
3. Illegal refers most specifically to violations of statutes.
4. Prohibited by law

ALIEN:
1. a person who is not a citizen of the country.
2. in the United States any person born in another country to parents who are not American and who has not become a naturalized citizen. There are resident aliens officially permitted to live in the country and illegal aliens who have sneaked into the country or stayed beyond the time allowed on a visa.

You're wrong, I'm speaking of children born on US soil.

They are citizens of this country, by virtue of their birth. Just like me. I'm a citizen because I was born here, not because of where my parents were born.

And yes, I'm incredulous that anyone would deny essential services to a child - any child - regardless of what their parents have done. We don't deny services to the children of other parents who have broken laws - even if those parents' citizenship rights (such as voting) are taken away.

RE; Your worng...

You seem confused Linda. The topic discussion is NOT about American citizens, it is about illegal aliens. No one is objecting about citizens attending college. They are about ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Zeezil

We don't have a lot of standards for behavior here at BlueNC. In fact, we have only one official guideline, which you can find in the "About us" tab at the top of your page. This sentence is from that section:

While we do our best to block spam, we do not block individuals from posting and commenting unless they are intolerably obnoxious.

Unfortunately for you, I am one of the two people here who gets to decide what is tolerable. Your repetitive posting of the same tired talking points and your YELLING at respected community members is rapidly approaching my limit.

Just so you know.

Zee and the Bible?

Are you a Christian Z?* Linda

" Amen, amen Brother! He or She that sneaks into my Kingdom without a meal ticket from Jeezbo, shall not get title to my Chariots of the Alien Lizards" * 1 st Max, Chapter 7, verse 66.

Z! Pay attention to my persona pic! You will notice that two brothers are giving each other a secret love hug in a religious ritual. Do you understand that if that was done in a Public Park, they would be arrested? Do you have a bail bondman?
