Miller v. Dole?

Jim Morrill at the Charlotte Observer got the scoop on this one.

A Democratic congressman from Raleigh said today that he's weighing a 2008 U.S. Senate run, making him the first potential challenger to Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole. U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, 53, said he's discussed the race with party officials in Washington and now plans to consult with friends in North Carolina.

"I don't plan to play Hamlet," Miller said. "I plan to get a sense of the lay of the land and make a decision."

Despite early speculation to the contrary, Dole, 70, has said she plans to run for a second term. Last week, she announced that her campaign had raised $1.7 million in the first three months of the year.

I've received three emails about this since the story broke

just a little while ago. This is big news.

If Brad decides to go after Liddy, it'll reshuffle the entire political landscape here in the Old North State. Not to mention the fact that there will be a critically important open House seat in his district.

Either way, it's pretty damned exciting. When I think about what life might have been like over the past five years with a responsible adult representing NC in the Senate instead of Liddy Dole, it just about makes me cry.

Dont worry

about that house seat. I already have my eyes on a Draft Grier movement if Brad jumps in.

The Hamlet reference

is the biggest reason why Dole should be scared.

If Brad decides to run it will be because he knows he can win, and because he knows the national party will put everything they have behind him. Lets face it, Brad is pretty safe where he is. At rates of over 90% every incumbent is relatively safe. Why give that up unless you can win?

Are yall ready for a fight? I know I am.

I am too.

The idea of a Senator who is an honorable person - committed to excellence in government and in the common good? That's something I could get pretty excited about.

Fleshing out "Draft Miller"

Are any of the web guru's interested in helping flesh out a more comprehensive draft Miller campaign? The petition, plus, say some highlights of Brad's experience and a "Liddywatch" blog? I'm happy to help.

ive got a good start

feel free to lift anything from all my diaries on the subject. Im too busy to help but there are about 20 diaries I have done since January on the subject.

And I really wanted to see Brad

Dress in black and put together a play designed to make Liddy admit she's a murderer ... oh well. Or maybe this is a 2010 story, with Liddy as Ophelia, Burr as Claudius, and Brad as Fortinbras? With a cameo by Robin Hayes and Ginny Foxx as Robincrantz and Ginnystern?

I hope that you were using "scoop" in a satirical sense...

You might remember that we heard the same "news" months ago. I guess the good news is that he is moving more towards the running side of things.

to be fair

Our side of that was that he never said no. This is him going to the press and saying, "Im asking for money and advice from big name Dems"

Should be an interesting race

I'm not sure Miller has the issue profile to win a statewide race in North Carolina, but I'd be thrilled to see him prove me wrong.

OTOH, I'd be ecstatic to see Grier Martin drafted into running for Congress. I've known him for longer than most folks, and I think he's got the chops to be a superstar in the Democratic party -- both in NC and nationwide. He may have cast some votes that folks around here didn't like (and will cast more of the same in the future), but he could be a real winner, electorally speaking.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

his votes

most of what i know about his voting record is that he stepped on some toes within the party leadership. but, he certainly wont lose friends here for his lottery vote.

For all those who might doubt him, Grier's house district was lean Republican when he won it, and he ran against a well funded Republican incumbent. He could easily take Brad's seat should Brad decide to run for Senate.

The big key here. . .

Is to not have a situation where we pick up a Senate seat and give up a House seat. We don't want a trade---we want it all!!!

I've just gotten to know G Martin and his stands here at BlueNC, and he looks like the real deal to me. Miller is attractive enough on his own, but what's even more attractive about promoting him is the ability to promote Marting, too. Any ideas for Martin's replacement?

War is over if you want it.

that is one

Later this afternoon Public Policy Polling will be releasing its latest survey.

-Does North Carolina support or oppose the creation of an OLF in Washington County ?
-Who would voters choose in a 2008 Senate race, Elizabeth Dole or Brad Miller?

Those are two of the questions in this latest survey.
