Documents recently obtained by the National Security Archive (under the Freedom of Information Act) reveal that in August 2002, U.S. Central Command’s war plan anticipated that only 5000 American troops would be left in Iraq as of December 2006. General Tommy Franks’ commanders assumed that U. S. forces would be almost completely re-deployed OUT of Iraq within 45 months of the invasion.
