In Newsweek, Troopergate gets more interesting. We all know that Sarah Palin fired and rehired a librarian who wouldn't ban books. But, I don't think we now just how bad her attack was on Alaska State Trooper Michael Wooten, and what the fallout was. Wooten was going through 'a bitter separation and divorce from Palin's sister Molly' - and Palin was trying to ruin his career over it.
Court records obtained by NEWSWEEK show that during the course of divorce hearings three years ago, Judge John Suddock heard testimony from an official of the Alaska State Troopers' union about how Sarah Palin—then a private citizen—and members of her family, including her father and daughter, lodged up to a dozen complaints against Wooten with the state police. The union official told the judge that he had never before been asked to appear as a divorce-case witness, that the union believed family complaints against Wooten were "not job-related," and that Wooten was being "harassed" by Palin and other family members.
Harassment by Palin wasn't enough apparently, she then abused her powers as Governor to try and end his career as a law enforcement office. When that didn't work? She fired his boss for not firing him.
The "Troopergate" special investigator, former prosecutor Steve Branchflower, was hired by a unanimous vote of state legislative leaders. His mission: to investigate whether Palin fired Walter Monegan—her State Public Safety Commissioner (and the official in charge of the State Police)—when he refused to dismiss or open a new disciplinary investigation of Wooten after receiving complaints about him from Gov. Palin and her husband Todd. Initially, Palin indicated she would cooperate with the investigation. But more recently, a lawyer hired by the state to represent her in the case asked the Alaska Attorney General to request that a state personnel board conduct its own special-counsel inquiry and demanded that the state legislature back off.
So, here we are with a VP candidate who fires librarians that won't ban books, tries to ruin the career of a State Trooper for personal reasons, and who has lied about....well, nearly everything. So, what is the mainstream media obsessed with?
Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, brought up lipstick on Tuesday in comparing the policies of McCain, his Republican rival for the White House, to those of President Bush.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," Obama said during a campaign stop. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."
'Pathetic'
McCain's campaign accused Obama of "smearing" Palin in "offensive and disgraceful" comments and demanded an apology — though McCain himself once used the folksy metaphor to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.
Lipstick. Who says the media is full of irresponsible hacks? Newsweek isn't.
Comments
Palin referred to herself and other hockey moms as
Pit Bulls wearing lipstick.
McCain wants us to be deferential to Palin. Why? Is she some delicate little flower that will wilt under pressure?
Nope, she's a Pit Bull. She said so herself.
You know, it's almost like McCain is saying, "Palin can't take the heat, so we're going to keep her in the kitchen."

I think Palin is going to end up costing McCain indys.
If every Indy went into the polls knowing that Palin was a book-banning, tax-and-spend, charge taxpayers per diem for staying in her own house, Governor who tried to ruin a state trooper's career over personal issues - I think they will lose. But, I will unfrontpage for you.

I hope you're right, but thanks.
I'm more open to posts that say "John McCain thinks it's okay for elected officials to engage in personal vendettas against law, so he had no qualms about choosing Sarah who? for his running mate."

When it is OK to taze a 10-year-old?
In your complaint about Palin "picking on" the poor, poor trooper - you didn't mention the fact that the trooper used a tazer on his 10-year-old stepson.
Is it OK to do that?
Because I was feeling pretty good about being on the side of the 10-year-old kid and not the brute using the tazer on him; but if my enlightened, liberal friends here would educate this poor, idiot, mouth-breathing fundie on the proper use of high-voltage non-lethal weapons in rearing a child - I would greatly appreciate it.
If it is OK - and by your omission of this detail, I'm assuming it is - I'm sure the next translation of Bible should have a Proverb that reads: "Spare the tazer, spoil the child"

Given palin's track record of lying...
I assume this is another. Assume it is exactly this kind of malicious lie that the judge was telling her to stop and which her friends in high places said put her in a 'grave situation'. The problem with conservatives is you can't admit your party is full of liars. W. Cheney. Rove. Swiftboaters. Foley. Abramhoff. Reed. Haggart. DeLay. Libby. Duke. McCain. Palin.
You are a bunch of immoral liars who have lost all ability to distinguish fact from spin. For example, "Palin is just as qualified as Senator Barack Obama".

Even though the trooped admitted to it...
...Sarah Palin made him do it.
Being the evil, immoral liar that I am (yes, I've publicly admitted it this very week) - I'm well aware of the dark side of the Force. She's much more adept at it than I am and made him fully describe the incident where he used the tazer on his stepson
Other people would view that as simple fact-finding; but your comic book-fueled view of the world allows you to see through my clever ruse. No, you're so advanced that you can just pass judgment. It makes your world a simple, little place to live - no doubt.
I, of course, am not as adept at the force as Republican elected officials, but I'm learning. Here's a video of me playing golf with some friends.

Husband subpoenaed in abuse of power case.
Nobody is supporting a child abuser.
The husband has been subpoenaed in this case. I don't know who did what, unlike you, but I do know that the Palin family is under investigation for abuse of power. Now, you say they are innocent.
Were you never told the story about the boy who cried wolf as a child?

The Palin Family?
Really, what powers were other members of the Palin family afforded in the Alaskan Constitution...do they have some bizarre form of Napoleonic code that gives her husband pardoning rights while allowing each of her children the right to hire two department heads each?
The Palin "family" doesn't have power; but that won't stop from people piling on them.
Stay Classy.

Ha ha ha ha!
Look at the funny conservative mince words. Your right, not family. The Palin wife and husband are under investigation - as well as the Palin father and other extended members of the Palin family - SINCE THAT IS WHAT THE ARTICLE SAID, THE PALIN FAMILY.
Silly me, I forgot the Golden Rule. When misleading won't work, just make it an argument over semantics.
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I think that you're doing enough obfuscation for the both of us.
The article focused entirely on the family's conduct during a divorce case BEFORE she was governor. The judge didn't bring up an "abuse of power", but rather the ferocity of the family of a private citizen during the divorce case of a guy who would taze a kid.
If someone were tazing my nephew, I'd become unruly.
Cabarruscheapseats.com: Reasoned Discussion of Cabarrus County, NC News & Politics
Okay, how about this
article:
The efforts by Palin and her husband to get Wooten fired intensified after she was elected Governor, using administration staff to help them and even the aura of the Governor's actual office itself:
When that didn't work, Todd Palin leaned on the trooper's direct supervisor in an effort to get him busted for worker's compensation fraud:
And by the way, the bipartisan investigation was initiated before Palin was selected as a VP candidate.
So?
A drunk driving trooper who tazes 10-year-olds was unfairly treated because someone produced photographic evidence that he was committing worker's comp fraud?
Do we not want this stuff reported? I guess the part that's shocking me is that if I pulled half of this stuff on my job - my conversation with HR would not involve a suspension...just a few boxes to put my personal belongings into.
I didn't bring this up to be a troll. I've been impressed with BlueNC - the interface is light-years beyond and the community is impressive. It has, however, devolved since the primaries. When a front-pager (Robert P) doesn't bother employing a 10 millisecond Google search to look up an article; but assumes that everyone who disagrees with him must be possessed...I might as well be hanging out at Ogre's.

Both Sides
I understand what you are saying on this, however, I would simply say that when a judge says "Be quiet" its likely that there is more to this than meets the eye.
I know that people will often lie in cases like this, so its hard for me to believe Palin's side of the story.
Outside of this specific situation, she has a pattern of abusing her power, if not illegally then in a manner that makes me really nervous after 8 years of George Bush.
"Keep the Faith"
"Keep the Faith"
You're right.
He has admitted to tasering his stepson in a demonstration, yikes. As I said before I don't support what he did, duh. It's hard to stick up for him in any way, shape, or form. However, an Alaskan judge told the Palin's to back off.
The allegations now are whether or not she tried to have a trooper fired for personal reasons and when his boss wouldn't fire him, she fired the boss.
Do you think that is reasonable for a Governor to use her executive power that way?
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

BTW, you can't blame me for assuming the GOP is lying....
again, in the Boy who Cried Wolf is not the townspeople's fault for letting him get eaten.
Swiftboat, Plame, Yellow Cake, WMDs, and on and on and on.
Is it really my duty to Google search every word that comes out of a GOPers mouth to make sure it isn't a lie?
After all, the point is whether or not she abused her power to try and have him fired, you have just turned this into a judgment on the man so that issue won't have to be dealt with openly. Because, if she did fire the guy for doing his job, then she looks bad and your party looks bad.

I assume all GOP talking points are lies until proven otherwise. If you were to write about what happened at the Cabarrus County Commissioners meeting I would not doubt you, so it is nothing personal. It is the national and even state GOP talking points.

Justin, you're a smart guy,
which means that I often "assume" that you fully realize how wrong many of your positions are and yet fight for them vigorously anyway out of sheer stubbornness and/or the thrill of the argument itself.
Which is fine but, you know, it doesn't lend itself well to self-righteous indignation over being marginalized. That ends up looking like just one more seemingly-clever debate tactic.
You want respect? Then lead with your heart more. You might screw up and make a few mistakes here and there that you can't distance yourself from, but that's okay because it's "real" and not an ideological costume.
If I were smart...
...would that be the best use of my time?

See, there you go again,
trying to confuse a simple-minded person like me with logical conundrums. And now you're squeezing me over to the side here, I can't hardly breathe, my claustrophobia's kicking in...*sigh*
He's a real winner, Justin,
and I'm pretty sure the public's better off with him not drinking and driving on duty and tasing bored children. But that's not really the point, is it? It's about Palin using her influence improperly.
Had this trooper not been her sister's estranged husband (or ex), and Palin somehow found out about the trooper's behavior, no big deal. As it is, though, it constitutes a substantial conflict of interest for her to intercede. Either she wasn't aware of this conflict (bad), or she was aware and didn't care (worse).
It's not about him, it's about her. And this:
is the stinkiest pile of doo I've seen (smelled) in a while. ;/
I've got your budgetary concerns right here. That...sort of doesn't translate unless you can see what I'm doing.
AMEN, Steven
well, I was all about "amen" until I formed a mental image of that . . . last remark about where you have those budgetary concerns tucked.
This is a situation somewhat similar to Easley's office interferring in the case of the officer who abused his dog. The Governor had that guy improperly fired. He just sort of skipped over the pesky laws in place for proper review, placed a phone call - and bam.
Now, everyone saw what the officer did and was horrified -- I sure was. But that doesn't justify what Easley did. He's the governor. The governor is supposed to not just know better but act better. And Easley certainly knew better -- he's a danged lawyer. This wasn't about his interfering because of a relationship with the dog, but it was about his trying to score PR points during a time he was taking a lot of heat from the N&O.
And it was wrong. Palin cannot paint herself as a reformer when she's playing her own dirty games and abusing her own power.
