In Newsweek, Troopergate gets more interesting. We all know that Sarah Palin fired and rehired a librarian who wouldn't ban books. But, I don't think we now just how bad her attack was on Alaska State Trooper Michael Wooten,and what the fallout was. Wooten was going through 'a bitter separation and divorce from Palin's sister Molly' - and Palin was trying to ruin his career over it.

Court records obtained by NEWSWEEK show that during the course of divorce hearings three years ago, Judge John Suddock heard testimony from an official of the Alaska State Troopers' union about how Sarah Palin—then a private citizen—and members of her family, including her father and daughter, lodged up to a dozen complaints against Wooten with the state police. The union official told the judge that he had never before been asked to appear as a divorce-case witness, that the union believed family complaints against Wooten were "not job-related," and that Wooten was being "harassed" by Palin and other family members.

Harassment by Palin wasn't enough apparently, she then abused her powers as Governor to try and end his career as a law enforcement office. When that didn't work? She fired his boss for not firing him.

The "Troopergate" special investigator, former prosecutor Steve Branchflower, was hired by a unanimous vote of state legislative leaders. His mission: to investigate whether Palin fired Walter Monegan—her State Public Safety Commissioner (and the official in charge of the State Police)—when he refused to dismiss or open a new disciplinary investigation of Wooten after receiving complaints about him from Gov. Palin and her husband Todd. Initially, Palin indicated she would cooperate with the investigation. But more recently, a lawyer hired by the state to represent her in the case asked the Alaska Attorney General to request that a state personnel board conduct its own special-counsel inquiry and demanded that the state legislature back off.

So, here we are with a VP candidate who fires librarians that won't ban books, tries to ruin the career of a State Trooper for personal reasons, and who has lied about....well, nearly everything. So, what is the mainstream media obsessed with?

Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, brought up lipstick on Tuesday in comparing the policies of McCain, his Republican rival for the White House, to those of President Bush.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," Obama said during a campaign stop. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."

'Pathetic'
McCain's campaign accused Obama of "smearing" Palin in "offensive and disgraceful" comments and demanded an apology — though McCain himself once used the folksy metaphor to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.

Lipstick. Who says the media is full of irresponsible hacks? Newsweek isn't.
