Illinois Police Officer Calls Taping "Felony"

I am not kidding. This clearly misguided, but apparently decent police officer, has no clue.

I hope you're a member of the ACLU

Thanks, Ashevillein. Being able to observe and record the actions of the police - our employees - is vital. And it is in jeopardy, as you point out (see this and this, for example).

When this sort of question about our civil liberties comes up, I remember my first loyalty, which is to the Bill of Rights. The Democratic Party is not particularly interested in civil liberties, much to my sadness, so I make sure that I always keep up my membership with the ACLU. True conservatives, by the way, also believe in the Bill of Rights, which protects us from our government. Too bad that Republicans are no longer conservatives....

I'm curious

Why do you say this?

The Democratic Party is not particularly interested in civil liberties

That hasn't been my experience, but I'm wondering what prompted you to say that.

The assault on civil liberties in this country over the past 6 going on 7 years is the most frightening thing I can think of. Everything else that the administration has done - including the horrendous "war on terror" - pales in comparison. Everything they've done seems to be a concerted effort to destroy the Bill of Rights and the Constitution itself.

Sometimes it makes me want to take to the streets with signs and rocks in my hands. Sometimes it makes me want to curl up in a corner. Usually I'm somewhere in between those two extremes.
