Howdy!

Howdy fellow North Carolinians! I'm a newbie here but I've been blogging since the 2004 election, mostly on Daily Kos.

I'm a 36 year old white male with a newborn and frightened wife (of what's to come with our haggard old world run by neocon-men, warmonging Republicans).

I have a passion for exposing the rapacious theocrats or anyone who chooses to ally themselves with the financial community-based earth rapist crowd for their own financial gain, see the Rev. Joel Hunter fiasco, instead of allying themselves with the children who have to live with the mess those people create: I have a BIG problem with any person that votes Republican in this day and age because they support the rejection of good people like the Rev. Hunter and his agenda for the poor and for the environment.

I followed the blogroll link over to BlueNC right in the midst of the blogrollgate affair going on at Daily Kos.

I guess one person's pain is another's gain...

I knew someone would show up. I told Anglico kos did in fact have a blogroll.

Glad you have joined us. Welcome.

Thanks!

And Kos made a great pitch for the growing local blogs and I can tell from the amount of comments that he is right that the local blogs are the future...

Oh no...I missed blogrollgate

I always miss the fun stuff.....damn!

Welcome EdwardsActivist. We're glad you're here.

Yep...

...don't even waste your time going to look... basically the 2nd tier blogs are mad that Kos replaced them on his blogroll with local blogs (like this one)...

much ado...

and i think

he was right to do so. local blogs inspire actual, boots on the ground, activism.

WHEN North Carolina goes blue in 08 it will be in small part because of this blog, not because of kos or because of a kos-like blog that focuses on some small subset of issues

i agree...

...this is a nice format... i'll definitely not be just a one-timer... thanks for the nice welcome.

Durham...

...right in the Watts Hillendale area...

since you asked that, let me mention something i plan to blog about here in relation to my neighborhood:

since i don't have time to go have a talking to with local officials about the lack of patrols (meanwhile we read incessant neighborhood emails of violent attacks), i plan to relay some of my feelings here instead.

i. want. more. patrols.

and i want more accountability and communications with the public on investigations.

i'm REALLY not a crime and punishment type of guy but this has gotten personal (for example, a neighbor down the road got repeatedly punched in the face by someone who punched through a panel in his door... he was upstairs and wasn't sure he heard something.)

i want to know the status on that. how do i find that out? do we bloggers need to push them to create a website for that? is there one already?

sorry for long reply... :)

I look forward to reading your posts on this.

I haven't thought much about it (the standard crime in my neighborhood is car break-ins), but on first impression it seems that there's a tension between the neighborhood's desire to know what's going on and the police's need for some space to conduct a proper investigation.

yeah...

...that's what i've been told but it shouldn't be so hard to find out if they've made arrests or not... or maybe for them to tell the results of their hunt using dogs...

Glad you found us.

Sounds like you have a fresh perspective that will keep us on our toes.

Welcome.

Man, that blogrolling meltdown at Kos

has gotten kind of weird. Booman and Maryscott have like a bazillion comments of the highest meta madness I've seen in a long time. I guess that comes with the turf when you're rich and famous and lots of egos are at stake.

If we ever go down that path, I hope someone will smack me.

maryscott's was tedious...

...and booman's was kind of just pathetic and groveling... ugh.

i have somewhat of a minor presence there and get recommended diaries somewhat frequently (have one red'd there now under different UID -- i'm a little hesitant to say who i am for some reason :)...) ...anyhow, if there are particularly interesting NC stories, i might be able to make some hay...

If you're clonecone you're hilarious

I went over even though you told me not to. :) I'm not a MSOC fan, so I stay away from her diaries anyway. Nothing against her....

Very glad you're here.

Can you point to a comment of meta madness?

Maybe it's sleep deprivation, but "comment of meta madness" sounds a bit like poetry, and I have no idea what it could possibly mean, and I wonder whether the real thing can live up to that descriptor. Check on sleep deprivation.

its so silly

its like anglicos "open thread on open threads" mixed with a few concern trolls mixed with bad jokes mixed with ego. and all of it about something that doesnt really matter

I just read MSOC's big long post at Dkos on the topic

And man, is she upset. If I'd known that the spot on the blogroll was such a big deal, I would have gotten a lot more excited about being there. If it's a recent development, though, I can't tell that it's made much of a difference in site traffic. I guess Kos does occupy a sort of special roll in the liberal blogosphere, and the question of whether he ought to be helping b-listers out is probably a lot like the question of whether the United State ought to be policing the world. It just is what it is, you know?

Anyway, I think that this movement towards recognizing state and local blogs as the next big thing is right, and its a natural progression in the order of things. As more and more people are involved online, it gets easier to do things like BlueNC. (Can you imagine what BlueNC might have been in 1998? Something like this, I'll bet, which is to say "not happening.") And as people begin to divide their time between state/local and national, there's less time to read posts on a topic at six or seven national blogs. So readership there will consolidate, and b-listers will fight for niche markets and c-listers will actually eat their shoes to survive.
In a perfect world, the same thing would happen at the state level, too. That is, there would be county or district community sites out there, which would pull attention away from statewide sites, thinning the market up here. Maybe that's where we'll be in a few years.

I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, prob'ly. Just saying that it all makes sense.

While we're being meta, Anglico will be surprised to know that I kept a record of our very first email exchange about BlueNC: a click-ah.

Also, something I've never understood about dkos --

what is it in the culture over there that results in such long blog posts? I'm not complaining, but how do people (like me) with short attention spans handle it?

phtttttttttt

You should write the opposite meta-diary. Talk about how we got new activists already writing diaries (welcome E.A.) and how our traffic has spiked.

Just kidding.

The best thing the blogosphere could have is a mini-DK in every state, like BlueNC. Imagine if the other 1000 DKers from NC actually joined BlueNC. It's actually overwhelming to think about, no more reading every post and comment.

Where are the candidates?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Welcome EA.

just my 2 cents....

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
