Help me figure this out?

Two days ago, North Carolina's Democratic candidate for US Senate graciously participated in a virtual town-hall meeting online. During that discussion, he shared some news that has immediately spread throughout the blogosphere, and which will make this race among the most closely watched in the nation. On Sunday, there was not one mention of the discussion in any North Carolina newspaper. On Monday, there was not one mention of the discussion in any North Carolina newspaper.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Lisa Zagaroli writes a story about Dole and Neal, completely ignoring Neal's live-blogging on Saturday morning.

Is she:

1. Annoyed because we didn't kiss the McClatchy ring?
2. Illiterate when it comes to using Google
3. Lazy
4. Or just plain incompetent?

It's a constant wonder to me why they pay her

Not long after the Aaron Lay indictment, she did a flattering puff piece on McHenry not mentioning it. I think then-McHenry spokesman Aaron Latham must have written it and she just had to cut, paste, and submit it. After giving it a kiss for her good luck and not having to work that day.

I guess Republicans don't have to hire as much publicity staff when they have reporters in their pockets like this. When you have so much to hide (like your voting record on SCHIP, your complicity on several illegal wars, etc.), it's SOP to have local newspapers and reporters on your side. You can't win without it. Demcratic candidates run on their ethics and records but Republicans know they can't do that. They have to run and hide and think of ways to distort the truth. Suborning the local press is part of that constant and necessary cover-up.

The Fetzer/Dole/Graham/McHenry crowd probably had a whole strategy worked out on what to do to out Jim and now that he did it all by himself, they're reporter "friends" don't have an action plan yet on how to handle it.

It was the weekend and they had no standing orders in place so they did what they're told in this cases: wait for the doctor to show up and write a prescription. I expect Fetzer et al will need to do polling before they let the reporters know what to do.

She also discussed things like money raised

And not anything about burn rates, or the normal barometers of how campaigns are doing.

And I think she still hinted at other people running against the Wicked Witch of the Watergate.

Your local movie review will be from India this year?

Yesterday at a group Alumi meeting for a first class university in Pittsburg, PA, which my wife attended with 600 hundred grads. A reporter for the Raleigh N&O who has written the Movie reviews for the past 15 years was piss that she was let go with 20 other reporters for McClatchy in Raleigh, Charlotte, Columbia, South Carolina this past week. It appears that their jobs were outsource to India. So much for Globism at work for the local mainstream media...

Just saw that myself.

back in Journalism School, that would guarantee an "automatic F."

Mr. Rob seems to have a small problem with the blogosphere.

PS Nice blog, Mark. Thanks for the link!

Or D, All of the above.

I don't think we get cred from the print media. We're a bunch of loonies sitting around with tin-foil hats typing away in our mommy's basements, right?

Ignore us at your peril. We are good at research, and even better at snark.

There's an old saying

Never get in a pissing contest with a person who buys ink by the barrel. I think that expression needs to be updated: Never get in a pissing contest with a bunch of bloggers who have nothing to lose.

It's no wonder newspaper editors sit by wide-eyed while circulation drops almost every day. Maybe reporters are mostly worried about whether they'll have a job tomorrow. I know I would be.

Another old Saying

Never get in a pissin contest with a skunk.

I keep getting city officials telling me, "we take not much stock in bloggers because they are hiding and afraid to sign their names." this - when my full name was right on the email. I appreciate what you all are doing and think most people do.

Al Manning, retiree, native of eastern NC and proud of it, plenty of time to read, research and get annoyed about the lack of accountability in elected leaders these days. Married to a real southern lady and we live with two labs and two airedales who run

Such bullshit

Anyone can get to my name in 1.5 seconds. And that's true for many of the people who post here. Maybe your city officials never learned how to read?

I own my comments. I own my opinions. I'm not hiding, nor is anyone else that I know of who posts here regularly.

Option (e)

They see blogs as a threat and have a policy not to report stories that appear online first. Of course, this only makes them look sillier as they clearly ignore a relevant fact to an important race.

If we mess up...trust me, they'll be hanging around

and sniggering.

Will be back later today folks. Hubby is home today and we have house stuff to do.

Iqnoring a story, news , or an issue is a tactic.....

Believe me , I know, because here in Onslow county, where the Republicans rule our "Jacksonville Daily News" paper, there is never a mention of my name as a candidate, nomatter how many press releases we send out. ...... ........On the other hand, if Walters Republican challanger, Joe McLaughlin, burps, it is front page news here......But that is another story....

The press, as I see it, consider themselves more thatn an information service. They consider themselves a sort of "power Broker" and when they are being fed from one basket, they more or less, follow the Q's of those providing the basket.

Jim is going to have a tough time in the press. The neocons here in NC will have a field-day at his expense. Jim Neal is a brave man.

FEAR is what the neocons count on! Don't give that to them!..Ever!

2014 U.S. Congress Candidate NC-03

Great point, Marshall.

The neo's here in North Carolina are about to learn another type of fear this cycle. The Fear of candidates and bloggers that won't take NO for an answer and are not in the least intimidated by their typical smear campaigns.

The Editor of the newspaper

where I have a blog actually asked, "why should we advertise your blog?" They piss and moan about lower circulation, yet my blog got over 5000 hits last month and is over 3000 now. They are all on a trip down De Nile!

He did.

And I thanked him for it.

Of course it helps to have a candidate who says what he means without having to check with the Decider first.

Ah, yes, a candidate (for Senate) with a fully functioning brain. How refreshing.

Up at Kos

Here.

Just so you know, I'm planning to push this for another day or two and then let the magic of the interTubes take on a life of its own. In the never-ending game of Whack-A-Mole, there's always something else to jump on:

Realtor Ticks
Less Merit
Flipper Hayes
Virginia Foxx
Walter Jones
Howie Cobble

Did I mention Less Merit? Please write to him today and ask him to remove his biography from the Watchdog website.

Heh.

Guess what. The state auditor's site is still down . . . even though Leslie's personal websites are all up-n-runnin'!.

Surprise, surprise.

Just so you all know...a Neal story is up on Salon

Because I'm subbing for Glenn Greenwald this week. I completely rewrote my post from the Blend and expanded it -- more mileage for NC and Neal.

North Carolina's newspapers/media

I had to find out who was running against Elizabeth Dole by doing a Google search. From there I found out that Jim Neal was her challenger. This will be a tough road to ho for any DEM... I am just hoping that the media comes around and gives Mr. Neal a fair shot. Fox News is already starting a smear campaign against him because he is gay:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,303916,00.html

To me it is a non-issue, but the right-wing nazis are dug in their smear bunkers..

It's good to have Fox and an enemy

Their viewership has been plummeting for the past year and only the extreme lunatic fringe pays attention to them anymore.

This is a great line:

davidnc76, that's not a smear

it's just another yawn. A smear is what framecop is doing on A's diary over at Kos. (I think he is a dem....)

Progressive Discussions

Sadly, there's no doubt Fox News would have

started a smear campaign against him if he weren't gay. He's a Democrat. That's all they need.

It seems to me Jim already did exactly what he needed to do on Saturday: he was clear and unapologetic and matter of fact about his orientation. And clear that it has absolutely nothing to do with why he's running for Senate. It neither qualifies him for the job, nor disqualifies for the job. End of story.

It also seems to me that NC voters care more about a candidate's spine, ability and intelligence than anything else. Some people will vote their prejudice, but nearly all of them are radical Republicans anyway, so how is losing them a loss for any Democrat? I don't know any Unaffiliated or Dem voter who puts their prejudice first in making their decision.

I believe, because I've seen it happen (Edwards, Easley, Boseman, Kissell), that a strong unapologetic Democrat who says what they mean and means what they say and proves it by their actions, will get even Republican votes when the Democrat is more capable. First on the list of requirements, North Carolinians want our Senator to have the spine to represent the needs and wants of the People of NC 100% of the time. Liddy Dole votes like a jelly fish who isn't sure who she represents,... the Watergate? Mr. Bush? Virginia? Texas? ???

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

It is a non-issue.

Let us all say a prayer for the dry humping bigots of Fox News.

"All we have to do is get out and vote, while it's still legal, and we will wash those crooked warmongers out of the White House."- Hunter S. Thompson

party registration figures, anyone?

I was wondering if the national trend of Republicans changing to Independents is also trending here in North Carolina as strongly? I suspect that there are more people who are disinclined to support Dole just by straight-party voting. With ending the war a strong issue - and we see it is getting a lot stronger in the military - it seems to me that people know that a vote for Dole is a vote for an unending war.

I see two parts: giving the public reasons NOT to vote for Dole (because incumbents always have a kind of advantage) and second, showing why what the citizens want is much closer to what the Democratic candidate will work to achieve.

Personally, I would love someone to film Dole's "residence" every night for the next few months to see if anyone is at home. And when she shows up for campaign events, have someone with a sign that says, "Dole can afford to get her face done, but turns her face away from poor sick Carolina kids."

For those who read my post on dkos, I have more stuff from my Texas sheriff granddaddy's campaigns I can share. I found one of his old speeches while researching his life, and it is a hoot.

Neal's live blogging

It is pretty frustrating that reporters were so slow to pick this story up. Just happy to see that Neal takes BlueNC seriously.

It was frustrating

I think it's mostly a cultural bias they have against granting credence to blogs. Pretty short-sighted, no?
