I've been around market research for 25 years and often think in terms of scales.
How often do you think in terms of scales?
Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 7 where 1 means you never think in terms of scales and and 7 means you always do.
See what I mean.
Extremism
My scale of interest today is extremism . . . because I've been wondering lately whether I am one (an extremist) or not.
There's no doubt I'm an extremist to somebody.
This question got raised when I snarked at Targator about being so reasonable. And just to be clear, I adore reasonableness . . . and Targator is as good as reasonable gets.
Using a scale of 1 to 7 where 1 is perfectly reasonable and 7 is extremely extreme, how would you rate yourself?

Extremely reasonable
. . . plus I'm not even sure these two dimensions are on the same scale. For example, couldn't one be extremely resonable?
:)
Wrong scale
wouldn't it be reasonable and ... unreasonable, stubborn, intolerable.
And even on that scale it depends what you're talking about. If it is politics, then right now I am a 7.
If it's life, I'm a 4.
If it's science, I'm a 2.
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

And very reasonable in responding to
questions about reasonableness too.
You're right about the scale. And the need for more specificity. I
think my interest here is in the area of political expression. I've been moving toward more provocative in hopes of shifting the center of gravity. But I'm not sure it works that way. And it frustrates the hell out of me.
Which leads to unreasonblenesss.
'Tis Seasonable to be Reasonable
Or so saith my brother Ian. I take that to mean that for reasonableness -- as for giant coolers awash in Everclear punch -- there is a time and a place.
Oh No!
I'm falling back in time to high school...everclear + red punch = a**hole juice.

I think I'm reasonable all the time
I'm also always right. So just don't argue and we'll get along fine. See, I'm reasonable AND willing to get along. This must mean I'm also nice.
OK, enough fun. Political reasonableness is probably a 2-3 most days and a 7 when I'm fired up about something. A, I don't seem to be able to shift to a more extreme voice and sound sincere. I've tried and it fell flat.

You're probably like my wife
She can't rant because she smiles all the time. I used to wish I was like that. But I've given up. I yam what I yam.
Oh I can rant....
but in person it falls flat because, yup I am always smiling. It sounds like I am like your wife in that respect.
Here's an attempt at a rant - Americans Deserve the Truth. This is my second blog and I don't write in it as much. I'm a big Murtha fan and when the mess started hitting the fan last night I responded. It's the second post down, I think.

Correct pairing
Should be moderate and extreme. Then for tone it could be described as reasonable or rantish (or equivalent).
I have no problem with an extreme position. The tone in which it is conveyed should be less than rantish if the author wants to advance the dialogue.
Yeah but
if it weren't for people with extremism in tone, the reasonably moderate middle wouldn't seem so . . . so reasonably moderate!
For my part, I aspire to "provocative" rather than "rantish," and it's clear I have a ways to go in achieving that exalted state.
Happy Monday, Targator!
