An explanation on Rep Jones.

The information I know is several Democratic Congressman in Washington have approached Rep. Jones to see if he is open to becoming a Democrat. These have included Rep. Gene Taylor, Miss, Mike McIntyre, NC, Heath Shuler, NC and I have even been told Stenny Hoyer has been in on some disussions. Also, some prominent in North Carolina have also approached Walter about switching. My sources say Jim Hunt is behind this and also Marc Basnight. Though I am not sure if Hunt and Basnight have personally approached Jones or if people representing them have.

Many on this blog are supporting Marshal Adame, and they seem to feel Adame is being pushed aside by Daily Kos and others for a Jones switch. First of all, Daily Kos has little effect on this, if Jones switches or not they will have little say in the matter. Secondly if Jones does switch it is most likley to be in 2007. Adame will get his chance to run against Jones though at this time the DCCC does not have the 3rd on a high priority list, mainly becasue the 8th and the 10th, if Will Johnson runs and I think he will, are what they think to be priority races. I do not know Mr. Adame but his support here is heart felt, I hope folks here do not get hurt feelings if thins turn out the way they could. To many in the party getting progressive legislation is secondary if its on the list at all, to getting Democrats elected. Courting Rep Jones to the party is a larger effort to bring blue collar evangelical Christian voters to the party and the conultants believe they are going to be the new swing vote.

As a "blue collar" (actually

As a "blue collar" (actually no collar, as I am unemployed) and former "evangelical" (I could never get that to work with what that Jesus guy actually said), I can say that I am no fan of Jones or his brand of politics. It is fallacy to assume that those two demographics have to go a certain way. Neither one of those things necessitates "conservative jerk-wad"

Thanks for the insight

For the record, most of us don't care about having our feelings hurt. I certainly don't. My mission is to push a progressive agenda. Walter Jones is the antithesis of that agenda. More to the point, I wouldn't walk across the street to spend one second with any flea-infested Blue Dog Democrat.

I suspect the insiders and power brokers are absolutely willing to toss aside progressive Democratic voters in favor of theocrats like Jones. In which case I'll start working for guys like Bob Orr, who at least understands the basic principles of separation of church and state.

It's looking more and more like it's time for a sustainable third party in North Carolina. The Blue Party would be my choice.

Walter is not switching!

True! I can assure you that Walter is on board for a 3 rd party move. He has no interest in switching parties at this time.

The problem is that 3 rd party is the brain child of James Dodson and his religious conservative republican nutcases.....

Apologies

s'cuse this non-post. I have twice drafted what I thought were eloquent points to follow up on Anglico's last post on the Walter Jones matter, but apparently have not overcome technical difficulties that would inspire condescension from a seven year old.

Isn't that frustrating?

I take help where I can get it.

As a follow up comment...

Call Mr. Jones, Jr's Washington Office at (202) 225-3415 and express your concern about having a double-flip-flopper from Eastern NC as a member of Congress.

What have YOU done today to elect a Democrat?

Thomas

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?

Congressman Jones, Jr is not contemplating a switch

At least that's what his staffers in Washington, D.C. says.

Mr. Jones, Jr. is smart enough to know that to do so would be political suicide.

I'd also like to add that any Democratic leader supporting such a move should be...Um...Thoroughly talked to about loyalty and honor.

Thomas

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?

and they would say that also

What I have been told is talks about a switch have happened to Rep Jones and he is listening but if a switch happens it would not be until after the elections of 2008 not before and many things can happen between now and then.

I will try to respond to all when I can

First as to blue collar evangelicals. What ever one personal views of evangelicals the are a political force, if the Democrats give the entire votes of evangelicals to the Republicans then winning elections would be difficult. However, evangelicals are not a monolithic group and those who work in the blue collar fields have expressed a dislike of the current GOP economics. The are not sure about the Democrats either because for the last 1/4 century the Democrast have embraced a social view that many find unacceptable, so the Democrats are trying to find ways to make they acceptable and converting Rep Jones would be a good start. IE, if the Democrats are good enough for him they are good enough for me. At least so they hope.

As for Rep Jones being a Democrat and holding office well yes that is the idea, if he switches it will be with every intention of him being a blue
dog US Congressman.

Anglico, the insiders and power browkers would toss aside almost anyone to get almost any Democrat elected.

Its Disingenuous to suggest that evangelicals are a block vote

in NC for Republicans.

In doing so you are suggesting that Democrats in NC, for the most part, are not themselves Christian. I feel that would be a misnomer. In California, it may be more of a valid assumtion which could be validated through historical outcomes in elections, but not in NC.

The dynamic has changed dramaticaly. Over the past seven years, even for evangelicals, the distrust, and suspect nature of the Republican leadersghip in this coutry has grown.

I have addressed many groups right here in NC who begin every meeting with prayer and who are intent on assisting my candidacy.

I am not casting aspersions upon THE MODERATE, but it would appear that he is moderating for Walter Jones, who in a commercial I heard yesterday, is now idenifying himself as a "Conservative Independent".

At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide, not the pundents, me included, and not those who are attracted to Democrats with Republican hearts and minds.

There is a distinct difference between Republicans and Democrats in principle.

In order for a person to change parties, in all honesty, that person would have to change his, or her entire outloook on the practice of Democratic governance in America, and I find that, in most cases, a little hard to believe.

May I reply with an "Amen,"

May I reply with an "Amen," or is that not allowed since I am a progressive Dem?

Before I go on

I will say that I lived in Pitt County for 20 years. I knew Walter Jones Jr during the time I lived there. I have not lived in Pitt County since 1999, nor have I seen Rep Jones in that time period, if I saw him today he may not even recongnize me. When he was a Democrat I voted for him in every election, I llved in the first and was not able to vote for him or against him as a Republican though in 1994 I did volunteer work for Martin Lancaster. I know nothing of his commericals as I now live in Catawba County. If I were asked should he be accepted in the party I would say yes, I do not think he should have left to begin with, but my opinion is of little relevance. In the end the powers that be, and we all should no who they are, the Jim Hunts, Marc Basnight, Roy Cooper, John Kerr's David Hoyles, ect are the ones who will decide this. I am just saying what folks I know who have been active in Pitt County politcs for the last 25 years are telling me.

As for evangelical voters, for the record belong to a mainline protestant denomination, we agree that a certain group of them have become disenchanted with the GOP and may well be the next swing voters. However at this time the Democrats have not made the sale and they have there work cut out. Christians voters themselves extend way beyond the evangelical community and the large majority of Democrats in North Carolina fits somewhere in the Christian community.

I'm not a pundit, and I'm barely a wag,

but this:

Walter Jones, who in a commercial I heard yesterday, is now idenifying himself as a "Conservative Independent".

sems like fantastic news to me.

If the RNC wants him primaried because of his anti-war stance, let 'em do it. If Walter loses and runs as an Independent, won't that split the Republican vote in the district? If so, all that remains is securing (most of) the Democratic vote for you, Marshall.

Hurt Feelings?

It's not about that at all.

It's about Washington insiders thinking they know what's best for North Carolina. That's bullshit. That's a great big load of bullshit.

Welcome to the world of politics

Its not just Washington insiders but North Carolina ones as well. However, whatever that was on Daily Kos yesterday will have little if any impact on this.

gee,

Thanks for the welcome. Cuz you know - I haven't been doing anything political - except for a lot.

It's still bullshit.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

I have looked at the scenerios very carefuly....

There are a few scenerios which will be most favorable to my candidacy and that is one. Another is that Walter loses his Primary to Joe McLaughlin. Joe is a "holy warrior" type. He will repulse many who would otherwise vote for Walter. In that scenerio, it is my estimnation that I would prevail over Joe.

We shall most certainally eventually know, for I am in this now to the end, however that end may occur.

I am confident history is in the making.

and I'm with you.

Since I don't live in your district, I'm going to vote with my wallet. Anyone care to join me?
