Election Returns: NEW Headlines and Open Thread

BlueNC Returns Threads:

SD's Kissell v. Hayes thread

Have your own favorite race? Start your own returns thread! Tell me about it and I'll post a link here.

(Pssst! The first thread is over here!)

3:03 - Looks like all of the state's media outlets are dead for the night and we will not get anything on NC-8 until the morning. Another note, Democrats control a majority of governors with at least 28.

2:39 - Looks like the Democrats took the Senate 51-49. Waiting for confirmation of Tester lead in Montana; Webb over 11,000 ahead in Virginia.

2:20 - No word out of Biscoe yet. There should be at least something tonight, if only a time to go to bed statement.

1:26 - Democrats officially keep significant margins in NC House and Senate. [Targator]

12:30 - Kissell/Hayes Margin Within 500 Votes and 1% — Recount Time? Provisional ballots to be counted.

10:57 - Black in Back

10:55 - IT'S SHULER!! Kissell Closing on Hayes

10:36 - Union County Approves School Bonds

10:15 - VA: Webb v. Allen Headed for a Recount?

10:02 - From NCDP HQ: Etheridge - "Dems Will Retake House Tonight" — Jerry Meek calling for a sweep of the state and the nation.

9:40 - Black's Back? — how is a body ever to know what to think!

9:37 - Wake School Bonds Looking Like Winners

9:28 - Bye-Bye Black?

9:18 - Harry Reid Thanks the Netroots

9:16 - State Races Update

9:12 - FL Rid of Katherine Harris; PA Washes Itself of Santorum - Congress just got a lot less yucky.

9:03 - GOP "In For A Long Night" with Yarmuth over Northrop in KY-3? - this was not a race the GOP was expecting to lose.

8:53 - Britney Drops K-Fed Like a Corrupt Congressman

8:48 - Nifong Wins - Durham's embattled DA survives the Duke lacrosse case.

8:44 - NYTimes: Butterfield, McIntyre, Myrick, Price, Coble, Watt Winners - these are not the races that have been keeping us up at night.

8:39 - Charlotte: Streets, no; housing and neighborhoods, yes. - Bonds, yo.

8:36 - Ohio Still Not So Good at Running Elections

8:21 - Meck Board of Elections Server Down

7:57 - Dude smashes a Diebold machine - in PA.

7:36 - Some Durham results will be late - because some stations opened late.

7:32 - Exit Poll Analysis a la Citizen-Times

7:01 - State GOP Chairman Blount Resigns - seems he wants to run for office.

What's the BlueNC election night plan?

Everybody dried off and warmed up? As the night progresses, I'll be posting headlines in this space and links to news here at BlueNC and elsewhere. I'll keep this post updated as frequently as I can, but I won't be going into much depth here.

In the box to the right, entitled "BlueNC Returns Threads," I'll provide links to BlueNC threads focused on specific topics: NC-11, NC-08, state races, national news, etc. These will stay on top, so that you can stay on top of the news. And, of course, the BlueNC community will be keeping it live in blog posts and comments.

One more thing: because we're spreading this out over a few threads, you may find the Tracker useful. Logged-in users who click the "track changes" link (in the blue banner at the top of the page) will see a list of threads with the most-recently-updated at the top and a column showing how many comments are new to you on each thread. Reloading the Tracker page is a good way for members to stay on top of comments and updates. (And if you're not a member, why not? It's free, for Pete's sake!)

I'll be back with headlines as they start coming in.

Not all bad, NC-05

Those are good numbers for a new candidate running on zero name recognition and near zero dollars. 2008 waits just around the corner.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Brad Miller

Brad on TV, just caught end, don't know if Robinson conceded. Robert?

Miller said on TV

"I haven't received that gracious call from Mr. Robinson yet." to paraphrase.

The Asheville Citizen-Times has provided the fewest updates

...of any of the NC newspaper websites I'm tracking tonight. Right now, as Shuler basks in victory, their headline is "Van Duncan wins". Who the flip is Van Duncan? I'm closing the A C-T tab.

Dem sheriff upset

in Buncombe and we're very happy.

“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.”
So enjoy the Drama.

I can't get any other updates

Mecklenburg is still very slow and the SBOE site is showing Mel Watt losing. Anybody have more current numbers for this race?

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

the mood here is thick and happy

David Price, Bob Etheridge, Brad Miller - all have this look in their eyes. I was just watching the returns on a little TV upstairs and starting talking to some fella without turning around, when I finally did I realized it was Bob Etheridge. He looks intense, like a football player during the national anthem kind of intense.

This could be a fun two years.

The Plank on Vernon:

Incumbent Democrat Brad Miller is trouncing my man Vern Robinson 66 to 34 in North Carolina's 13th, though only 39 percent of precincts have reported ... I guess that means two things: Totally rabid anti-immigrant rhetoric didn't cut it this year (we'll see this for sure when we get numbers on the JD Hayworth/Harry Mitchell race in AZ), and conservatives' desire to turn a House race into an enormous flip-off gesture didn't overwhelm their sanity.

You gotta love Arizona for variety

Defeats Minuteman Graf,
Makes English official language,
Raises minimum wage,
and passes:
Proposition 200: $1 Million Voter Reward
Would establish a "voter reward" random drawing every two years with a first prize of $1 million or more in an effort to increase voter participation. Voters who cast ballots in primary or general elections would be eligible to win. The money would come from the Arizona Lottery and private donations.

Discuss or disgust?

One step backwards in MI

Passes:
Proposition 2: Restrict Affirmative Action
Proposed amendment to Michigan Constitution would "prohibit the University of Michigan and other state universities, the state, and all other state entities from discriminating against or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin." On June 23, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, ruled in favor of affirmative action in the University of Michigan's admissions policies. The Bush administration opposed the university's pro-affirmative action admission policies.

confusion

from what I understand it was title "Affirmative Action", but if you support affirmative action you had to vote NO.

Nice work, live blogging from the NCDP HQ, Robert!

It was great to see you there and so nice to meet John and his wife.

I'm glad I had the chance to tell Jerry Meek that I think it's awesome that he posts here on BlueNC and other blogs. And it is.

NCDP rocks.

Thanks from me, too.

I'm really glad you were there. Drive safe.
