Duh

Ever since Liddy Dole hired Brian Nick to oversee the end of her political career, I've been waiting to see the guy in action. The Dole campaign just released it first quarter numbers, and it's clear he plays a sloppy game of bullshit.

Sen. Elizabeth Dole raised more than $1.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, her campaign said Thursday. More than 9,000 donors contributed to Dole's re-election campaign, and the senior senator from North Carolina hauled in more than $1 million in March alone. Dole had hoped to raise that much during the entire quarter ending March 31.

"To almost double that number is a huge outpouring of support," said Dole adviser Brian Nick, adding that she has more than $1.5 million in cash on hand. Federal financial reports are due April 15.

You gotta hand it to Lyin' Brian, he's got balls to make up stuff right there in front of god and everybody.

Dole had hoped to raise that much during the entire quarter ending March 31.

Says who? Brian Nick? The revolving-door spin-meister who floats from one losing campaign to another? From where I'm sitting, no amount of money can save Dole's surgically crafted butt this time around.

Let's say I raise a million bucks this quarter

and then I tell a bunch of reporters (after the fact) that I really only planned to raise half that. All of a sudden it looks like I did twice what I had hoped for.

Then I get to brag and say what a huge outpouring of support I've received.

I think that qualifies as "duh."

Well yeah, but Democrats do that too

They have a number they tell the press and a number top staffers know. For example, for Edwards the press number for Q1 was $10 million, and the number inside the camp was $15 million.

What's more interesting to me was their burn rate - they had $250,000 COH, so they burned almost half a million in the past three months. That's encouraging.

However, I'm really surprised she raised that much. That number scares me - which, of course, is what it's supposed to do.

conjecture

The inside number could have been 12 or 20 for all you know.

For all I know?

I don't know too much about what kind of fundraising is expected

But if 1.5 million is "an impressive sum" (http://politicalinsider.com/2007/04/coleman_franken_raise_impressi.html) for Coleman, who didn't just totally fail as NRSC chair, then 1.7 has gotta be worth something here. I'm not saying she's telling the truth, but nobody with any sense of reality would expect a failure to raise that much.

It's not a pleasant fact, but we aren't in a good condition for the senate race. We don't even have a candidate, and Liddy's still running and can still bring in the benjamins.

I'm sure this has been talked to death, but is there any chance Jim Hunt (or any other prominent politician) is just sitting on the sidelines for now just to make a dramatic entry closer to the election? That would be pretty nice.

Thank God

I call BULLSHIT

hauled in more than $1 million in March alone. Dole had hoped to raise that much during the entire quarter ending March 31

Lets look at what she said in January

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole said in a fundraising letter this month that she needs to raise nearly $1 million a month through Election Day 2008 to defend her seat in Congress.

In a Jan. 5 letter to people who have supported her and other Republicans in the past, Dole said her re-election effort may cost $20 million, nearly a third more than she spent to win the seat in 2002.

Liar Liar Pants on Fire.

Just remember Mr. Nick...The press might not have a long memory, but I will remember everything you do and say, and I will call you on every little teensy lie.

Again, not quite right

She needs to raise $1 million a month ... but that's assuming that August, September, and October will be worth over $2 million each. You raise a lot more in the even numbered years than you do in the odd ... if she raises 6 million this year, she could still be on track to raise $20 million.

ok

then dont send out a letter saying, "We need a million a month from you" and then say, "Oh wow, we were hoping for just 1 million in three months!! how fantastic!"

but im in a bad mood and needed to put up some vitriol at kos

included in that diary is this little bit of math:

What is 1.7 million divided by 9500?
$1789.47

We need to see where it came from

and then send some of those donors a nice letter. Namely, the in-state ones that aren't die hard Republican donors.

That is, if she has any of those left.

I've been looking for a place to write this comment.

The 1st quarter is the "most important" for the Presidential race, and for other races too. It's when major donors and groups decide if you are for real. Also, she did say she wanted to raise a million dollars a month and only raised $500K. Lastly, she now has "true believer" connections throughout the country, I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of these funds coming from outside NC.

Well, we're going to to scour those FEC reports

I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even try in January, and perhaps the true believers came back on board for February and March. We'll know soon enough.

she was sending out fundraising letters soliciting monthly donations in january and february.

She probably wasnt having events until March though.

to take her on.

Protests to the contrary, will it be Easley? How about Elizabeth Marshall? Will it be someone who actually lives in North Carolina, supports North Carolina, and is willing to call her on her on her BS?
