Democratic Debate Open Thread

The debate is two hours long and it starts at 9pm on MSNBC. I know that at a minimum Gravel has not been invited. So, we might have a little more time per candidate.

I'll update as we go.

Where Edwards starts the night.

Media domination has been focused on a frame of Hillary v. Obama - just turn it to MSNBC right now. But, Edwards has quietly been putting himself in a great position for where the race actually starts, in Iowa. The Senator is well positioned in Iowa for two reasons – the first is just how darn good he relates to Iowans. Republicans might think of John Edwards as a sleazy trial lawyer, but Democrats see him as a man who has fought big business, corporate lawyers, and abuse of the system. The second is the idea of taking on a corrupted system in Washington, which Americans know and feel and want to change. John Edwards is the only one who is standing up and saying its time to fix this system.

If we don’t, then we will turn over a worse country to our children.

If you defend the system, you can’t change it. You can’t get universal health care counting on the system to be on your side, you just can’t, Clinton tried and it is 13 years later and whaddayaknow, no Universal Health Care.

I think that Edwards is the best candidate, Iowans know this. There was this latest poll in Iowa where Clinton lead...unless you only took into account people who stuck around for the caucuses last time, then Edwards cleaned everyone's clock. He's not a rock star, he is the next President, that is who people want to vote for in Iowa.

Thanks for this, Robert.

I don't get MSNBC. Go John! :)

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Edwards wins NH SEIU!!!!!

This is freakin' huge!!!

From MSNBC First Read.

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
After weeks of intense lobbying by the top three Democratic presidential candidates, Edwards has come away with the endorsement of the New Hampshire SEIU.

The endorsement will help Edwards considerably, providing him with financial resources and volunteers in the Granite state. It will also prevent other state chapters from sending volunteers to New Hampshire to campaign for either Obama or Clinton.

This is the 12th state SEIU endorsement Edwards has won; the others include Iowa and California.

Rocky?

WTF? The flying squirrel?

Edwards up.

The choice that voters have.
Bush has destroyed the trust relationship between the President and the voter and the world.

Who can you trust? It's fair to look at what people say.

She defends a broken, corrupt system. She continues to say she'll continue combat in the war.

Basically, says one thing, does another.

Edwards really laid into Clinton.

I think that will be the clip played over and over and over. Her response is tepid.

Agreed Robert...and her responce was very inadequate....

She was not ready for that... In any case JE focused on the meat of the subject regarding Iraq and her support for continued "combat" engagement. He hit the nail on the head.

Did Hillary Clinton just flip-flop in the same debate?

In the beginning of hte debate I am sure she said she had a plan for Social Security, because it was in the midst of a stream of thought that sounded JUST like Edwards (specific plan stuff). Now, just a minute ago, she said she wasn't going to stand for any particular fix until later.

Yes.

You just heard that.

And she sounds so angry tonight. I think polls will look different tomorrow.

Back to "no freakin' clue"

I've been pretty vocal about my rather intense dissatisfaction with Edwards' tenure as a Senator, my irritation with his 2004 run, and my extreme reticence to support him in 2008. My hopes were on Mark Warner, and when he dropped, I've been waiting for Obama to start firing. It hasn't happened.

I like what Dodd is saying about the Constitution, but he's a classic "coastal candidate." I want someone who will make the Republicans sweat North Carolina a little bit, not write it off as safe.

After tonight, from what I've seen on Youtube and read on the blogs, I think I'm back to a five-way tie, possibly with more room at first. The fact that I'm even considering Edwards as a top tier choice shows how well he did tonight. My skepticism of him runs very, very deep, but it was hard to not be swayed by some of his statements.

Pull another J-school incident, and he'll be back in the cellar, but for now, I'm giving him a second look, much to my surprise.

The best moment of the debate.

This sums up how I feel about this election.

Read the speech that Stan posted.

It should be required reading for anyone who is going to vote in the primary.

That said - I'm looking at and liking Dodd a lot more since I did my research on education. He's got some really concrete plans. Obama, I'll be ready to see some more of him in 2012, or 2016. He's not there yet, but he will be. I did have an aha moment when they asked him about his name and the "swiftboating" of him by calling him "Osama". I'm still not sure that I agree with it, but I do think that the impetus behind the gospel tour of SC was to remind folks that he isn't Muslim.
