Are we there yet?

I can be a little paranoid. In fact, friends laugh when I insist on using the qualifier "little" in that sentence. I know this, so I resist the urge to pull out the tin foil hat. Really, I do.

But I saw the news of the US Attorney's FIRED without cause first at dailyKos and Josh Marshall takes it seriously and fleshed out which ones were getting booted and for jimminycricketssake, Ed Cone put up a link to that and now I'm getting a little upset at my stomach. My "concerned-0-meter" is edging into the red, boys and girls.

So I have to ask those I respect most what they think ...

Are We There Yet?

Or have we Americans really gotten so used to the 24/7/365 Bread & Circuses, Inc. on the teevee that we just really and truly do not give a flying flip about the loss of oversight or the loss of our own liberties. Are we gonna stay in this boiling pot and not make a peep unless and until they cross a no-go line somewhere in the distance ... take away our beer and football ... or institute a military draft?

Please understand that I have not the first foot to stand on and lecture anybody about getting involved. Most of the time I count it as clear victory when I make it to some after-work meeting or a weekend "thing."

However, yesterday at the MLK celebration at First Missionary Baptist Church in Smithfield I heard a passionate, beautifully challenging fiery sermon from a pastor who lost his congregation and home in New Orleans on August 29th, 2005. After that sermon, a wonderful Johnston Democrat our friend chartreuse dog, reminded me Monday that non-violence is NOT the same as passivism.

She is absolutely right. Not only does it take paying attention and a good bit of work, non-violence requires a kind of strength unknown to many of us. It requires the rejection of a large part of our own human nature. Anger, hurt, dispair, loss, gain, hate, revenge -- a commitment to non-violence requires throwing all those tendencies and reactions out the window. And THAT takes a huge amount of courage and discipline.

Non-violence sees the truth and stands up, respectfully speaks up, quietly acts up and graciously refuses to shut up.

Passivism says, "Just leave me out of it, please."

So, if someone out there has been watching the mess made by incompetence at the Federal level, the past ethics issues in our state gov't, or the current growth management problems in our County governments and you've decided you just want to be left out of it ... you might be a pacifist.

With all that's going on these days, now would be a good time to quit being a pacifist. :)

I also need to know whether or not this odd dread I feel today is valid because I am dangerously low on tin foil and may need to borrow a roll from somebody.

Go ahead ... snicker. I ain't laughing, y'all.

I'm glad you wrote this

I'm not generally paranoid at all and I am totally freaked by this. It feels like a slow-motion coup, unfolding right before our very eyes.

I have a feeling that people who've resisted the urge to impeach the Child King may be rethinking their positions right now. It's scary shit.

You're right

and I'm one of those rigid unapologetic, "yeahbutthenwegetCheney" impeachment resisters. I'm starting to soften up.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Impeach Cheney too.

They're both lying crooks and equally dangerous.

No doubt

But who would the 'publicans put up in their place.

It's enough to drive a girl to drink, but first I gotta drive meself home and hug my kid. :) I'll be back on in a couple hours.

I agree...

it's like the big lie and 1984 all wrapped up together in one package. They just keep hammering you in the head so much that when they hit you in the toe, you think...that's not so bad.

Where are the candidates?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Shee-it this is not good

WTF is going on? Is he hoping that no one will notice and try to put a stop to this? The Dems are...right? How far can he go before they call "time out" on this?

I dunno mo,

but I'm at the point where I want to know whether those new (empty) detention centers people keep talking about are real. Somebody posts pics of a few of those things and I might be shopping for lead & brass rather than tin foil.

Leslie....do you want the heavy duty foil?

Or regular foil. I keep plenty of both. I don't use them very often, so have enough for us both.

Late to the party with my tin hat

This frightens me more than I can articulate.

Where Is The Media?

All I can find is a little bitty biased article in the LA Times and the Kos links to the AR Times.

Why is this not front page news nationwide!?

Where's the WaPo? the Chicago Trib, the NY Times, the Globe ... anyone?

Hello, Bueller?

They are waiting to be spoon-fed some

happy horse sheet from Dubya and his brain.

Out of curiosity...if happy cows from from California, where do happy horses come from?

Kentucky

Definetly not Western North Carolina though. Unless Charles Taylor was raising happy horses to eat...

Thanks for adding tags, A ... or whoever. ;)

NPR, CNN ... progress. Here's hoping several journalists from several newspapers are hammering out their final articles on the issue as we type. I'm no legislator or attorney or even a political scientist of any sort, but this looks like a clear abuse of Oval Office power.

Patriot Act

Yet another example of things the WH slipped into the Patriot Act legislation that our eager-to-jump-on-the-911-bandwagon Congress wasn't paying attention to.

The Patriot Act Was Unnecessary -

- we already had the laws in place had people been doing their jobs.

Added note ...

I've asked a few people here at work if they'd heard of the US Attorney issue and not one of them has. I work with fairly informed intelligent people. Not one of them knows about this stuff.

Well, they didn't. Now they do. :)

I did the same thing, Leslie.

I was amazed that no one else had heard anything about it. And then - they started looking at me funny. As if I had tin foil on my head or something.

Speedy Gonzales denies any politics involved

today in the Washington Post they had this story about the US Attorney Generals being fired....

Gonzales's remarks in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee came in response to questions from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and other lawmakers about the forced removals of at least six U.S. attorneys, including several who have overseen some of the government's highest-profile corruption prosecutions.

Oh, no -

"Gonzales testified, adding later: "I would never, ever make a change in a United States attorney for political reasons ..."

He would never do that !

Right.

Yeah.

He would never tell the President that the Geneva Conventions don't apply, either.

Oh.Wait.

Never mind.
