Lt. Gov. Candidate Dan Besse Speaks to BlueNC

Dan Besse, one of our strong Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor in North Carolina, attended the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party convention on Saturday. We had a chance to speak with him and he was kind enough to allow an impromptu video introduction.

Dan Besse speaks to BlueNC:

Thank you, Dan Besse for giving us this wonderful introduction. Thank you for doing it with zero notice. You obviously know why you are running and you've given us a great deal to think about.

Update: I meant to add that we are working to feature the other candidates for Lt. Gov. at later dates. I have only met Hampton Dellinger and Dan Besse, but would have no problem supporting either of these men.

Great candidate - bad location

Please excuse the background noise. The setting was very loud. Also, at one point the camera starts moving up and down. It was on a tripod and was secure. It's got to be ghost.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Sound is always a problem

unless you have a detachable mike. You often just have to take what you can get. And I always get jiggly without a tripod. Sometimes I can rest the camera on my other arm. If the person is comfortable and there is time, I will stop recording and set up somewhere better. But, that's a risk. You might break the mood or they're really busy.

So, great job, SD!!! By the end of this year, we're all going to be vloggers, don't you think?

And all the men and women merely players.”

Definitely worth the listen

Don't be put off by the ambient noise . . . just crank up your speakers and listen all the way through. Dan knows why he's running and he's up to big stuff.

Thanks for taking time to do this, Dan.

SD you do such good work.

A new Kissell supporter has the best mentors she can have...The Southern Dem and Working for Change....and then this. This is really great for an impromptu stump speech. I don't know him, but I think I will.

He didn't even pause to consider after I asked

Actually took me by surprise that he agreed so quickly! I hope we didn't make him too late to an Earth Day event he was heading to.

What a great idea

my camera has the video option, but I'm going to have to read up on it before use. I wish I had thought of that when Walter Dalton was the keynote speaker at the Moore County Dem Convention. He is running for Lt. Gov. too and I would have liked to have heard from his lips why.

The white noise was not too distracting, even when Mr. Besse spoke softly, just made me listen harder. Reminds me of a quote I read once, "Those who refuse to listen to shouting will strain to hear a whisper". Thanks for bringing his message to us SD.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

Thanks, SD.

He's a very effective speaker - even under those conditions. I'm impressed with what he said, and how he said it.

I think the Lt. Gov race will be very interesting!

You gotta love Dan Besse

I think it's a mouthwatering prospect to have the chance to elevate an anti-war environmentalist to such a high office in our state. This would be a real shot across the bow of NC conservatism.

I've met Dan a few times at Forsyth Dem activities, and I can tell you he's the mild-mannered guy who must be wearing a superhero outfit under his suit. I'll bet it's green.

While I'm still weighing my options in other races, I'm in with Dan all the way for Lt Gov. He'll continue to impress all the way to the finish.

War is over if you want it.

Seems like a nice guy and a good environmentalist. Since I am no longer a party official, I am free to endorse in primaries, and I will be backing Hampton Dellinger, who brings a strong progressive record, green bona fides and a brilliant intellect to the job.

But it is good to have good candidates. Thanks for posting this.

Im still leaning

towards Smathers, but I havent heard any bad things about Besse or Dellinger.

You know, if Brad doesn't announce

We've got to get one of these guys to run for Senate ...

Hamp's winning the money race, last time I checked, and I think Smathers is running the best campaign (though we're only in the message stage) ... this is gonna be interesting.

im sad

we have to wait until the summer to see what the money game looks like. this is a weird no mans land right now.

"Keep the Faith"

I think

It's a wierd everyman's land right now. An embarrassment of riches, if you will. There are alot of talented people in our party. I've now met or heard Dalton, Dellinger, Besse, and Smathers. Is there anyone else? I can't say I'd be disappointed with any of them. So far I'm most impressed with Smathers and Besse. I'd like to hear more from Besse.

I'm sure he will be happy to oblige

I agree that we can't make a mistake with any of them. I have not met Dalton or Smathers, but from what I hear about them I feel confident either would do a great job.

More thoughts on why I'm running

Many thanks to the Southern Dem, Working for Change and BlueNC for the chance to answer the question, "why are you running for lieutenant governor"?

There was one other thing that I meant to mention in my quick summary statement on Saturday, and think that I neglected (speaking without notes, it's easy to drop a point by mistake). Under the more general area of "equal opportunity for all" I include a particular interest in equal opportunity regardless of gender--and necessarily a critical part of that is access to reproductive health care and choice. As one way to help make that commitment a reality, I'm proud to have supported and worked with Planned Parenthood for years in support of access by all to reproductive health care. After the Supreme Court's decision last week, it's clear that state-level support for choice is going to be more critical than ever in coming years.

I'm not that great as a blogger--I tend to drop in a thought or response and then not have a chance to check back for a few days--but I'm happy to respond to direct questions as well. Please feel welcome to write me at, or for general background and basic priorities check my website at I'll also try to check back on the BlueNC lines more frequently.

Thanks Dan

I'm really happy we met. You were terrific speaking without notes. HOpe to see you on the campaign trail.

Dan Besse is the best elected official in Winston-Salem

He's been a real leader in W-S and would be a great LG. I'm supporting him and really hope he wins. He projects authenticity, gravitas, optimism, and all the right values, and would be a real activist as LG.

Mr. Besse,

Spoke at two NoOLF public hearings.

The first one was in Perquimans, a five hour drive for three minutes.

The second Charlotte. Everyone for NE NC thought he was great and his efforts to help us by speaking on our behalf did not go unrecognized.

Our folks are the conservative, of conservative who are mostly registered Democrat but will vote Republican in a heartbeat. They will dissect each candiate's merits with never ending discussions like they did on the bus ride home from Charlotte. They were all sorry they did not get to meet Richard Moore who also came to speak but had to leave due to late hours.

Thank you Mr. Besse for taking the time to show NC that you care.

Susan, Thank you

I feel a bit of hope with candidates like Larry Kissell and Dan Besse who are able to appeal to almost all Democrats. We recognize that many registered Dems in this state vote Republican much of the time. I'd rather reach out to them than push them into the Republican party. We can find common ground. We just have to be willing to work hard to do it.
