Open Thread: What's Your Beef?

I'm on the phone with Chase trying to convince them that, yes, I meant to buy that sleek, sexy, 2Gb MacBook with the printer and neoprene carrying case. There's not some shut-in teenager surfing the net and stealing my card info. I am who I say I am, and, yes absolutely, I want that freaking computer.

What's your beef today?

The "most deadly shooting spree in US history"

That's sticking in my craw.

Not counting the Civil War, of course, what about Little Big Horn? And we'll never know the body count from the Wilmington race riots. Is it that they were using bayonets? Or is it only the murders of European Americans that count?

Does it have to be the "most" for the media to cover an event? I guess this is the most by one dude? Gimme a break.

Being honest about our history does not detract from the grief and horror of these current murders. But it surely does diminish the worth of an African American's or Native American's life. Don't think they've forgotten the mass murders and the biological weapons of mass destruction (like poisoned blankets) just because we have.

Ooops, Wounded Knee

not Little Big Horn. but I guess that could count, too.

Sorta true.

Or 9-11. I guess there have been other times in U.S. history when greater numbers of civilians were killed. But they are obviously referring to the subject through modern criminolgy eyes, where it's a mass murder by one person or a "spree" killer (as opposed to serial killers).

Very sad but,

how many people die the same way in Iraq every day.

Are Americans more important to the 24 hr spin cycle? Yes, we can have our cameras there in no time and we don't have to worry about our helicoptors being shot down.

It galls me so much how many journalists have given their lives to report in the Middle East on Bush's war and yet the wing-nuts say "Ooh, the liberal media never reports all the good things going on in Iraq."

Newsworthiness.

I would say this Va. case is different because it's nearby (or right in the continental U.S.), because proximity does have a lot to do with what makes a story newsworthy or not. Another point: people are fascinated by lone spree killers. They find them bizarrely frightening, like in that wax museum chamber of horrors way.

I agree

I can't comprehend what has to happen in someone's brain to make them do such a thing. And because I can't comprehend it, I can't be sure it won't happen to me or someone I know. Yikes!

My beef

is the fact that the power to my house has been off all day because of the windstorm. I'm currently working in the Chapel Hill Public Library with my whole family.

In other news, it sounds like Bev Perdue kicked up a fuss talking to the Beaufort County Dems this weekend. Someone sent me this quote by email

"This (OLF) issue has defined us, ... but it means in no way that we are not patriotic," Perdue said. "We love the military. We don't want the OLF."

That pretty much says it. We don't want the OLF.

I put that quote

in a post and get nothing. someone emails it to you and you repost it. i see how it is.

I'm sorry.

I didn't see a post on it and didn't know you had already jumped on it. I try to read everything, but with the library closing soon, I'm speeding through things faster than usual. I owe you one.

I had power out all night and most of the day

So I drove to the library (20 minutes) to check out the Lees-McRae website to see if the Kerry Kennedy event: "Speaking truth to power" was still on. Figured if it was sparsely attended I could snag an interview!

The LMC website was down so I drove another 20 minutes to Banner Elk with my van being thrown all over the road, driving under a tree that ten minutes later would have flattened me, only to see the sign: "All Kerry Kennedy events are cancelled due to bad weather." Should have picked up the phone!

My power is out, too

And I'm down to 42% on my laptop battery. Come on, Duke Power. It's way too early to go to bed.

My beef

is that there aren't enough Dems like Momoaizo.

Go, SD!

Damn, that's a big precinct. I hope you get your votes.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Gandhi

We have 889 Dems who voted this past fall

This is a pretty big precinct. The biggest problem is reaching people. The short list of phone numbers from the party was pretty rough. No email addresses. I downloaded the voter files from the Meck BOE and have looked up phone numbers by hand.

The 50 invites were delivered in my neighborhood alone. There are 2791 registered Dems in my precinct. How can I afford a way to reach them all. Figured I would start with my neighborhood and branch out from there.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

My precinct

is about 1/6th the size of yours. Just as daunting, though. I'm working on an email list, because it's just so dang cheap. Phone calls take so much time, and it's rural, so there's no way to walk it - but the best thing about my precinct is that if I put a notice up on the bulletin board at the 2 Post Offices we cover and the Piggly Wiggly, I can be pretty sure that a whole lot of people who need to see it will see it.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Gandhi

Tip

To have a higher success rate and make the list of people to call a little shorter you need to find a way to locate the "die-hard" democrats.
A very handy tool in this is the VAN website from the state Party.
A trick we are using in Cabarrus County is to look up democrats in a precinct who voted in the last city council election. There wasn't really anything to decide here in that election as the result was pretty much known before hand. The democrats who voted in that election just did so because they believed it was their civic duty. In one precinct we tried this it brought the list from several hundred democrats down to 75. We called all 75 of them and 12 showed up at the precinct meeting.

Cabarrus Democrats

VAN website?

Is that how it reads? Can I get that info for my precinct in Moore County? I got a list of all registered dem voters in my precinct from the BOE, but it didn't show the votes. Maybe I asked for the wrong thing, but if I can get that info online, well I'd much rather do that.

call

your county party chair and you should be able to get it.

Ask for an electronic version (excel probably) including email, phone, and voting history.

Either choose a small local election with little importance and call those people OR call those who voted in 5/6 general and primary elections.

During the Kissell campaign we called Meck voters inside the district who had voted in 6 out of the last 5 out of the last 5 elections (02 primary, general 04 p,g and 06 p) and we ended up getting a volunteer every 9th or 10th person.

VAN

VAN is short for Voter Activation Network.
It is an online database maintained by the NC Democratic Party and a real treasure chest for party activists.
It has all information you want about all registered democrats and unaffiliated voters all over the state.
You can find a lot more data on there then the Board of Elections can ever give you.
Ever reasonably organized County party should have 1 or 2 people who have access to this online database. You should contact your County party Chair and see if they have access to this information.
Since a lot of this information is pretty sensitive, access to this website is limited. In every county there's only a few people who can get into the site.
I have access, but only for information within Cabarrus County.
You can find the VAN website here.

Cabarrus Democrats

I do not have access to the VAN

However, I am quite familiar with the voter data base from the county. I just look up the phone numbers by hand. However, I am able to weed out inactive Dems.

I'm not complaining about how much effort it's taking. I've already met a couple of people in my neighborhood who are so nice and so excited about being involved that I imagine we will have a lot of fun. I wish I had just sucked it up and worked this method from the beginning instead of working with the party's list.

I've only had one person who was rude to me either on the phone or knocking on doors. That's pretty much a record.

I don't think it's the greatest idea

to write about "sensitive" party tools on a public website. You can contact people through the "Private message" option and talk all you want about the VAN or anything else.

However, we've already written a lot about it here in the past, so I guess it doesn't matter. And I know you're just trying to be helpful . . .
