Happy Sunday afternoon, everyone. The site looks so spiffy, I can barely take my eyes off of it. I've got a big writeup of yesterday's Immigration Town Hall Meeting to do, but there's also the competing pull of family, friends, festivals, chores, and football. How do you all balance your political activities with your other priorities? This weekend I gave up a number of opportunities to be with family in order to soak in venom from the sacs of the Republicans and to lampoon them in another, soon to be revealed, project.
How do you balance it all?

finding a balance is next to impossible
the closest i've come to finding balance is right now, actually. i've got the laptop in the kitchen with me right now - wash dishes for a few minutes, work on cleaning up the town hall audio for a few minutes, check the bloglines feeds, all the while trying not to splash soapy water onto it.
i don't generally recommend washing dishes with a laptop nearby, btw.

Crockpot.
The crockpot is our friend, now that my wife is back in school. It always was, but if I can get up and get everything into the crock, then it is waiting at night at dinner time. Works for me.
As for balancing. I do the same thing you do syntax, my computer is sitting on the countertop and every once in awhile knonck something out.

yes. we love the crock pot.
we have five of them, actually. but somehow, even if either my wife or myself cook using the crockpot (the ultimate one-pot meals, imho), the recipes usually always call for searing meat or sauteeing veggies or something involving about two-thirds of our cookware before we can turn the damn thing on.
at least that's what it seems like.

Bal-what?
Just chasing down the Puppetmaster is a full-time job, with very little near term expectations or satisfaction. It's like a sick game of Whack-a-Mole that never ends.
Right now I'm also helping with homework, doing laundry, thawing chicken for dinner (okay, it doesn't take much work to thaw chicken), catching up on email, and prepping for three conference calls tomorrow. Which would be bad enough if I were a kid, but I'll be 56 this month and sometimes the swirl of all this really wears me out.
And then I think of this and I take a deep breath and put on my holster.
dang, i gotta get something out of the freezer, too...
thanks for the reminder, a. :)
(also, some of those images were spilling out of the side of the center column - it probably looks okay on a bigger monitor, but i'm stuck with a 1024x768 resolution screen...)

I don't sleep...
For me to do what I do (which, admittedly, isn't much), I sleep less than 3 hours a night, most nights. Up at 4am to read news, off to work at 7 after getting the kid ready and work till 5pm. Luckily, right now, my job doesn't require much of a mental committment, so I can spend a good portion of my day reading, writing and planning the next post. Soon, though, my job is going to get busier and I'll have to really learn to balance.
Also, the crockpot and microwave are my bestest buddies...

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?
I know how you feel.
While I get more than 3 hours, I do a lot of the same stuff. I really feel like we all need to be together on election night to celebrate, for all the work we have done.

I wouldn't be able to break my boycott for that...There's a football game on NBC.
But I'm here, at my desk, reading, writing and trying to figure out how the heck to get Craig Weber into Congress.

I'm still working on balance
But I think I've got my drinking problem under control.
I'm watching the game.
I'm not even switching to the propomentary.
I would be making more calls for Kissell, only I'm exhausted after this weekend and its after their "do not call" time.

I'm helping my daughter
start to think about college.
Her current list:
Antioch
Belmont (Nashville)
Warren Wilson
Preference is smallish liberal arts school with inspiring music program and good education major. Any ideas?
how much music?
I spent 2 years at St Johns College in Maryland.
www.sjca.edu
I could give you a long long discussion on it if you want.
Lyndon Helton for NC Senate
"Keep the Faith"
I've had lots of friends at Antioch.
They loved it. Evergreen out in Washington (I know nothing about its music program). NYU? Flagler College in St. Augustine was cool, you could check it out.
New College?
This is an interesting article, economic diversity at top liberal arts colleges.

I graduated from Warren Wilson
If your daughter wants to email me any questions, she's welcome. I have nothing but good things to say about Warren Wilson, where I got an English degree in 1993.
I first attended Oxford College of Emory University, a small two-year college (550 students) that's part of the Emory system. Those who choose it then move into Emory as juniors.
There's also Berea.

Just back from weekend holiday
and want Lance to know that I love the changes.

To handle the 20-30 hrs. a week I'm spending on local affairs I've chosen the "Brock-method" - shorten my sleep cycle (but, then again, I'm a codewarrior from the old-school where being a night owl was a solid requirement).
Warren Wilson is a fantastic school. Having attended an institution modeled on the good ole 19th century authoritarian model, I'd suggest anything but - Warren Wilson, Guilford, etc.
Finally, Lance, damn good upgrade. I want to
stealborrow your templates and plugins. Would you consider putting up a page on how you made the BlueNC magic?CitizenWill

bluenc is drupal-powered
and the template looks slightly similar to others i've seen, but with several tweaks and additional sidebar doo-dads (are they called "widgets" on that system? i'm not sure... but they should call 'em "doo-dads"). other than that... i guess this is where lance would step in. :)
from what i've heard from different users, drupal is the bee's knees as far as CMSes go. perfect for political/community sites.

It's true: Drupal is all six of Apis mellifera's flexures
And confession time: this theme is a barely-modified version of the SpreadFirefox theme. It just happened to look a lot like the old site, what with the blue-gradient bar at the top and the three-column layout. I'll be making a few more changes over the coming weeks (narrowing the right column, for one thing), but nothing major is planned.
Thanks Lance...

Moving to drupal
When I ran for Council in 2005, I started out with Civicspace (which is backed by Drupal). Unfortunately, it wasn't "quite right" on the back-end. I decided it would be better to spend my time running for office rather than screwing around with my websites software - so I switched to Wordpress, which has been fine.
I'm now looking to switch to a system with more flexibility - so I've setup a Drupal only site. The problem? It's ugly (at least so far). BlueNC not only looks better now, but it's more functional (though I'm still looking for Thread Name:Comment Title on the Comment-RSS feed ;-) ).
