MLK Day thread

There will be and have been a lot of reflections on Dr. King's life today and this weekend. In recent years, I've taken this opportunity to reflect on his wife, Coretta, as I will do again here.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery at Coretta's funeral a few years ago sums it up well. Watch the whole video, it's worth it.

Be sure to check in at about 1:05 through 2:00.

But in the morning, will words become deeds that meet needs?

The Amendment: Just the Facts

Now that the NC General Assembly has finished passing the Does-Nothing-About-Divorce Amendment, it's time to look at the text of the bill and discover the truth about the law.

First, it's been reported that the amendment will be on a ballot in May. It ain't necessarily so. Take a look at the text of the bill. It reads:

The amendment set out in Section 1 of this act shall be submitted to the qualified voters of the State at a statewide election to be held on the date of the first primary in 2012, which election shall be conducted under the laws then governing elections in the State

Latest version of Voter ID bill says some people can't get a Voter ID

What fresh idiocy is this?

From the latest version of the "Voter ID" bill:

(b) No registered voter shall be eligible for a North Carolina voter identification card if that registered voter has a valid unexpired drivers license, learner's permit, provisional license, or a special identification card for nonoperators issued under G.S. 20-37.7.

So, these idiots are going to require people to have a photo ID to vote, and then bar people from getting a voter ID.

NC GOP House members try to erase the Bill of Rights from history

Well, that's not quite true.

They also want to erase the rest of the amendments to the Constitution AND the "contributions made by Americans of all races."

Take a look at the bill yourself.

There's even a part of the bill that eliminates this language!

The curriculum content established shall include a review of
the contributions made by Americans of all races.

Who writes these bills?

Amateur hour for the NC Senate GOP as session opens

Also file under: Useless Fights, Wasting Time, and Bad Politics

Those following opening day at the NC General Assembly will have noticed that the new GOP leadership of the Senate is rewriting a few chamber rules. Big whoop. Happens every session.

However, this time the GOP is said to be creating a new position called "parliamentarian" basically to override the Lt Gov's rulings from the chair if they don't like a given ruling.
