Maxine Solves Another Group of Problems

Everyone concentrates on the problems we're having in this country lately; illegal immigration, hurricane recovery, wild animals attacking humans in Florida .

Not me. I concentrate on solutions to problems. The result is a win-win-win situation:

+ Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border

+ Use the dirt to raise the levies in New Orleans

+ Put the Florida alligators in the moat.

Any other problems you would like for me to solve today? Maxine

PS. No bill will be sent as I do this as a Public Service. Maxine

Supreme Court to Rule on Whistle Blowers Case

The Supreme Court is now hearing a case concerning whistle blowers that will have a large impact on the public being protected from over charges (usually huge companies such as defense contractors) to the federal government and faulty products sold to consumers.

Whistle blowers are people who are working for the company and knowing what is being done come forward to report the criminal activity. This is not an easy thing to do because the repercussions for the person are grave. Most lose their job of course, but often they are then known in their field as unreliable and find it difficult to get another job. Employers want people who are “loyal” to the company and whistle blowers it seems are considered disloyal. No matter that they are protecting the public, no matter that they are doing the right thing. They were disloyal to their employer and are therefore unreliable employees.

Hillary? Please Tell Me You're Joking.

Ellen Goodman is a lady I read and often agree with. She is insightful and has a heavy dose of that thing the guys like to call Women’s Intuition (substitute: instincts) because a good many males just can not bring themselves to admit that women can actually cogitate. So yes I often agree with her assessments. And I strongly agree with her when she says the country is ready for a woman or a Black as president. I would even go so far as to say we are long overdue. For years it has amazed me that the most liberal country in the world for women is the most gender biased as far as elective offices are concerned. Whereas several countries around the world whose culture allows women to be considered chattel have had women in the top governmental positions.

I was happy to agree with Ms. Goodman’s article Ready or not A woman is most qualified Dem for president in 2008; a black is most exciting, but only partially. When she gets to promoting this particular candidate I staunchly disagree. Ms. Goodman is of course referring to Hillary as the Democratic candidate for president in 2008. A topic I have read and heard discussed now for six long years and we still have two whole intense years to go. Dear Lord! I even had a serious moment when I actually considered a move to Outer Mongolia to get away from this nonsense. Well, I can’t do that, and as long as I am anywhere near a computer with Internet, radio or television I WILL continue my almost life long addiction to news. The only logical action I can take then to get it off my chest is to toss Hillary in the trash can where she belongs. I may also slip Mr. “Who in Hell Are You?” Obama in there with her. (Tho I may pull him back out after more consideration, but for now he is just a charming man who came out of the blue with no experience governing and I would hate to entrust him with running the country at this time.)

My parents would swear on the Bible that while other babies begin to make sounds with “ma-ma” their little bundle of joy came from the womb screaming “WHY?”. Things haven’t changed much in the intervening years. Below are some of my favorites. BB

Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?

Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know there is not enough money in the account to pay the first charge let alone any additionaL ones?

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection?

Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but duck when a revolver is thrown at him? A Site Worth Visiting

In one of my meanderings over the Internet one day I ran across a really interesting site: Yes it can be said to be a “conservatives” site if you want to label it, I guess. I am neither a liberal nor a conservative since I hold strong opinions favored by both camps. I am however, I believe, an intelligent person who refuses to gulp whole anything without running it thru the test of the knowledge I have managed to obtain, and retain, thru the years. Then I may accept or reject the whole, or accept and shape to my own opinions parts of what I read, hear or see. That is what has come to mean to me; a place where I get others opinions based on their knowledge and in this way add to my own knowledge base. With this attitude towards all peoples opinions KNEE JERK liberals or conservatives annoy me. And, greatly sadden me.

Eminent Domain Issue Re-visited

A commenter on one of my post brought up the Supreme Courts latest ruling on eminent domain. I blog on this a year ago when the Supreme Court delivered a ruling that allowed private property to be taken by the state and then given to a developer to develop for private use. (Reference my blog on the ruling: ( Nov. 6, 2005 - Bad judgment on the Part of the US Supreme Court)

I had no trouble with the law governing eminent domain since as I understood the Founding Fathers included these strictures in the Constitution as a protection of the public. My understanding was that the government could take private property for use ONLY for the PUBLIC good and after appropriate compensation to the owners. Public good to me meant mainly roads and bridges and perhaps government owned buildings if there was a pressing need to build on that particular site. What I didn’t know was that the courts had ruled in many cases where private property was indeed taken for private development thus setting a great deal of precedence for the Court’s ruling in Kelso vs. City of New London, Conn.

His Majesty Mitch

I have lived in a total of twelve cities during my adult politically active life and Greensboro is the only one to have an imperial city manager. The eleven others had a governing system where the city council was the ultimate employer and had the last word on any decisions that had to be made. In Greensboro the city council who are our elected representatives are merely figureheads. They rule on zoning and pass the budget and go to dinners, and of course they do hire the city manager. After the hiring however their influence seems to end unless they are far more diligent than our present city council.

Having always known systems where the city council had ultimate control over the affairs of the city I was surprised when City Manager Johnson took the actions he did with then Chief of Police Wray. My first reaction was, “What right does Johnson have to rescind Wray’s prerogatives?”. Then I got the shocking answer: he has every right to do ANYTHING he wants to do in the city government. EVERYONE but the elected city council works for, and is answerable to, His Majesty Mitch.

Identity Theft ! It can Happen to Anyone.

I ran across this bit of advice and thought to pass it along. Some precautions against Identity Thief I had taken, but there are others I hadn’t thought of. So, for what it is worth to you. BB

1. The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.

2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED."

3. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check-processing channels will not have access to it.

Gold Star Committee? Yes! Gold Star Advice? No!

I haven't commented on the Iraq Report because I just could not believe it. These very intelligent people are recommending that we and the rest of the non-Muslim world in effect totally concede to the thugs in the Middle East. I can not believe these people who have lived thru so much, and surely know the history of this area and the peoples of this area, do not yet understand that a willingness to reasonableness is seen as weakness.
Of course due to the respectability of the members of the commission President Bush is being very careful to praise the report while making clear he is not going to follow it’s precepts. Going to Iran and Syria with hat in hand asking them to intercede in Iraq to calm the waters. How quaint! How naive! That is going to the wolf and asking him to leave the hen house once he is already in and creating havoc. Now you and I know the wolf is going to laugh at the farmer just as Iran and Syria is going to laugh at President Bush. They will indeed meet with the president and shake hands and smile and nod to the cameras and make nice sounding comments about the unity and friendship of the countries, but behind all this they will know we have conceded our responsibility in the area. They will know the free world has thrown in the towel.

Israel and It's Neighbors Gearing Up For War Again

While I have seemed to be tied up here at home with the City Hall Circus I have kept an eye on Israel. Things aren’t good. The information below comes from a variety of news services and news papers so I didn’t list any as verification. (So sorry to you sticklers.)
Unfortunately when the United Nations cajoled Israel into pulling out of Lebanon before completing the job they had set out to do it was counted as a victory by the Arabs. Not withstanding the surprisingly inept job that this new Israeli command was doing, given time they would have succeeded in subduing and cleaning Hezbollah out of Lebanon. When I say "new Israeli command" I want to point our that these people have never had combat training as commanders since Israel hasn't had an Actual war since 1973. This time when they go back it will be a totally different picture. Below are some news stories backing my prediction:
